Design Features
The Rafale is a multirole combat aircraft, rivalling the Eurofighter Typhoon. It was designated “omnirole” to describe the simultaneous air-to-air and air-to-ground capabilities. It features HOTAS controls, with a sidestick controller on the starboard console and a small-travel throttle lever.
Power Plant
Two SNECMA M88-2 augmented turbofans, each rated at 48.7 kN dry and 72.9 kN with afterburning. M88-3 of 88.3 kN maximum rating is offered as a follow-on, and is being developed for the export Rafale.
Crew
Pilot only, on a SEMMB (Martin-Baker license built) Mk 16 zero/zero ejection seat, which is reclined at an angle of 29º. One-piece Sully Produits Spéciaux blister windscreen/canopy, hinged to open sideways to starboard(Right Hand Side). The canopy is gold-coated to reduce radar reflection.
